Navelbine (vinorelbine)

Vinorelbine is a type of anticancer chemotherapy drug that belongs to a group called vinca alkaloids. It is given as an intravenous (IV) injection in a hospital or clinic.

It works by interfering with the ability of cancer cells to divide, which slows or stops tumor growth.

What is it used for?

Vinorelbine is mainly used to treat:

• Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) (most common use)
• Sometimes breast cancer
• Occasionally other cancers (off-label use depending on the doctor)

It may be used alone or combined with other chemotherapy drugs such as cisplatin.

How it works

Vinorelbine blocks a key part of cell division called microtubules, which cancer cells need to multiply. When these structures are disrupted, cancer cells stop growing and eventually die.

Common side effects

Because it also affects normal fast-growing cells, side effects can occur:

• Nausea and vomiting
• Constipation
• Fatigue or weakness
• Hair thinning or hair loss
• Low white blood cells (increased infection risk)

Some serious effects that require medical attention include:

• Severe infections or fever (due to low immunity)
• Nerve problems (tingling or numbness)
• Severe constipation or bowel issues
• Liver function changes
• Breathing problems in rare cases
