Avastin (Bevacizumab)

Avastin is the brand name for bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody used in the treatment of several types of cancer. It works by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a protein that promotes the formation of new blood vessels. By blocking VEGF, Avastin reduces the blood supply to tumors, thereby slowing their growth and spread.

Avastin is commonly used in combination with chemotherapy for the treatment of cancers such as colorectal cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, glioblastoma, kidney cancer, cervical cancer, and ovarian cancer. The medication is administered through intravenous infusion under the supervision of healthcare professionals.

Clinical studies have shown that Avastin can improve progression-free survival in certain cancers and, in some cases, extend overall survival when used as part of combination therapy. However, the benefits may vary depending on the type and stage of cancer.

Like all medications, Avastin can cause side effects. Common adverse effects include high blood pressure, fatigue, headache, nosebleeds, and protein in the urine. More serious but less common complications include bleeding, gastrointestinal perforation, impaired wound healing, blood clots, and severe hypertension.
