Bevatas (Bevacizumab) – Overview
Generic name: Bevacizumab
Drug class: Anti-angiogenic monoclonal antibody
Administration: Given as an intravenous (IV) infusion under medical supervision.
Uses
Bevatas is used in the treatment of:
- Colorectal (colon and rectal) cancer
- Non-small cell lung cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Certain brain tumors, including glioblastoma
How It Works
Bevatas blocks a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). By inhibiting VEGF, the drug prevents the formation of new blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to tumors, helping slow or stop tumor growth.
Common Side Effects
Some commonly reported side effects include:
- High blood pressure
- Nosebleeds
- Headache
- Protein in urine
- Dry skin
- Changes in taste
- Back pain
- Bleeding
- Inflammation of the nose (rhinitis)
Important Precautions
- May increase the risk of bleeding.
- Can delay wound healing; doctors should be informed before surgery.
- Blood pressure and urine protein levels are usually monitored during treatment.
- Not generally recommended during pregnancy.
